Four A Level Accounting students at One Sixth Form College have made over £10,000 on the stock markets.

Lydia, Isabelle, Alice and Jess (pictured left to right in the photo) have been taking part in the Student Investor Stock Market Challenge. This is a finance competition with students investing virtual money in stocks and shares using the London FTSE100 market in real-time. Teams were mentored by Antony Bennett, Sam Sage and Paul Hinchcliffe, teachers at the college.

Organiser of the competition, A Level Accounting teacher Paul Hinchcliffe, said: "The competition has given the students a great insight into the world of trading on the stock market and a taste of a future career in corporate finance."

The group of Year 12 Accounting students trading under the team name 'Cash Crowns' have been carefully studying the financial press and following the daily stock prices of their share portfolio to buy and sell shares over a five month period. At the end of the trading period teams had to undertake a presentation to an independent business panel. ‘Cash Crowns’ won the prize for the highest valued share portfolio and the best presentation.

The team beat eight other teams at the college. The competition is an opportunity for students to improve on their employability skills. Working in a closely-knit team students had to communicate regularly and make informed decisions about their share portfolio. Students were able to use their knowledge from A Level Accounting to analyse company’s financial statements and directors reports.
