What does the course involve?

 

Business is an exciting and creative course that will allow you to consider all aspects of working in industry. It will give you an understanding of exactly what happens in the world of business and will help you develop skills and knowledge.

Within this one year course, you will study different topic areas in Business which will provide a broad understanding of the ways in which businesses function, the people who own and manage them, and the methods to attract and satisfy customers.

The topics on this course include:

  • How businesses select, recruit, train and employ the right staff for the right job
  • Effective marketing looking at how a business communicates with its customers and attracts them to buy the products and services that they have produced
  • How to work out profit and loss and prepare a cash flow forecast. This topic looks at the importance of finance in any business, how financial transactions are recorded and then used by the company to aid its decision-making
  • Developing your teamwork and leadership skills to be successful in business.

Students study this course for numerous reasons, a lack of confidence in the classroom, barriers to learning at school or as an opportunity to develop themselves before moving onto Level 3 study. This course is designed with these needs in mind and ensures that those studying it will be given the required to bridge the gap between school and Level 3 study, ensuring that you will leave this course with the confidence and skills required to excel at Level 3 study.

The Institute of Directors Student Membership Scheme is a prestigious and exclusive link held between the IoD and One Sixth Form College. Gaining one of the 14 places on the Student Membership Scheme will allow you to have access to company directors, networking events, valuable work experience opportunities and make important links to potential employers.

This is a highly sought after opportunity that will look amazing on your CV and at a job interview. You will not only make links with top companies, but can participate in workshops on public speaking, effective networking, CV/interview practice and much more. As part of being a student member of the IoD, you will organise the Student Leadership Conference as a team, drawing on your links and skills learnt throughout the scheme.

STRIVE

Strive “Women in Business” is an opportunity for female students and male allies across the subject to understand the barriers that women still face in industry today. Students will have the opportunity to network with successful business owners from small and large organisations to provide the skills and knowledge required to inspire the female leaders of the future.

Our Business students have the opportunity to take part in weekly meetings where they will meet with employers, universities and apprenticeship providers that we have developed links with. Students will be able to develop the skills and knowledge required to stand out from the crowd and put them in the best position possible to be a success when they leave us. 

Entry Requirements

Standard entry requirements, plus: 

  • Grade 3 in GCSE Mathematics 
  • GCSE English at grade 3. 

Can I take additional qualifications?

You will have the opportunity to retake GCSE Maths and English if required.

How will I be assessed?

A combination of coursework and external assessment. You will provide a portfolio showing evidence of the twelve units you have studied and undertake external online or paper based tasks in two units (Marketing and Finance). You will be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade at the end of the course.  A full award is the equivalent of three GCSEs.

What are the costs?

There are no charges to study on any of our courses. However, you might be asked to contribute to the cost of occasional trips.

What is the duration?

This is a one year course.
