Arts Awards Honours Talented Students and Former Colleague

Talented artists were rewarded for their efforts during a fashion show and visual arts awards ceremony at One.

The fashion element of the proceedings showcased the work of textile design and foundation art students.

Awards were given in a variety of categories including most promising, most talented, most committed, most innovative, most dedicated and most determined student in categories based around art, foundation art, graphic design, photography and textiles.

Director of curriculum at One Sixth Form College, Jake Robson, oversaw the occasion. He said, "We've had so many wonderful successes over the years and I'm sure that this years graduates will be equally successful. There is so much excellence, creativity and ambition here. We are excited by their future potential."

A series of special awards were also distributed. Jacob Downey received the teacher's award. James Richford and Jas Catling received the Milsom's award.

And visiting artist, Ania Hobson – who recently won the BP National Portrait Award young artist of 2018 – chose Jasmine Hammond as the ONE student most representing the up and coming artistic talent of the future. Ania, said, "I'm amazed by the standard (of work). I wouldn't be surprised if many of you gain commissions from this exhibition."

The final moment of the night celebrated the life of a former member of staff, Gordon Haws.

Mr Robson explained. He said, "It was very sad this year as we lost a colleague, Gordon Haws. We wanted to keep his memory alive and we already have an artistic tribute and plaque in his memory. We have also created an award in memory of Gordon to recognise a young photographer that most embodies his legacy and we will make a trophy that epitomises Gordon's unique approach to creativity. The student we thought was the most fitting recipient is Bilal Bounit."

On gaining this award, Bilal, said, "Gordon was special. He encouraged me to do whatever I love and do it in my own way. To be recognised in commemoration of Gordon is phenomenal. To say I'm embodying his legacy is amazing. I hope I can have an impact on other people like he did to me."

During 2017/18, students have exhibited their work in London and Ipswich – and they also went on trips to Cambridge and Paris.
